Do you know the signs of a Leaking Shower that you should be looking for? This blog will give a brief detail of the telltale signs that you might have a leak in your shower.

If a constant musty smell is emanating from your bathroom you can be sure that it is probably from a leaky shower. While the smell can be unpleasant for the occupants it also signals that there is mould and rotting happening. Mould and mildew thrive in humid and moist environments. Bathrooms with poor ventilation are breeding grounds for these bacteria. Unfortunately, no amount of elbow grease with chemicals will rid you of the mould. The mould is embedded deep inside the grout. The grout will need to be removed and re-grouted with mould inhibiting grout. The best prevention for mould and mildew in bathrooms is to have proper ventilation. When having a shower always use an exhaust fan or leave a window open to reduce the moisture and humidity. After your shower use a squeegee to take off the excess moisture of the walls and shower screen. Bathrooms need to be cleaned and disinfected on a weekly basis. If you do have a leaking shower or a leak in the bathroom, get it fixed as soon as possible, the longer the leak is left the worse the damage.

Cracked or loose tiles within your shower it can be caused by a number of reasons. Some of which are building movement, damaged grout or incorrect installation of tiles. Once water penetrates underneath the tile, it destroys the bond which can lead to the shower wall swelling causing tiles to fall off the wall or crack. In the case of floor tiles, they will either pop up or crack due to the pressure. Left untreated for a period of time and it eventually leads to structural problems within the surrounding areas. Wet carpets and flooring, damp walls are all signs of a shower leak left for too long. The only way to stop your shower leaking is to seal all the places that water can penetrate.

Bubbling or peeling paint is common in bathrooms with poor ventilation or one that has a leak. The high humidity and moisture found in bathrooms can cause problems for the paint. Certainly in cases where walls have not been primed correctly or the wrong type of paint has been used. Once moisture gets between the wall and paint it destroys the bond causing the paint to bubble.

Resist the urge for a quick fix by painting over the problem area. Identifying the root of the problem will be more cost-effective in the long run.

Damp and damaged walls can be caused by two issues. The first being plumbing. A plumbing issue can vary in a range of severity. Sometimes it's as simple as replacing a worn washer and other times a serious issue like a broken pipe behind the wall. The second issue is grout or sealant problems. Over prolonged use and perhaps building movement the grout and silicone sealant has deteriorated. Cementitious grout is porous if it is cracked or missing it allows water to penetrate under the tiles. Walls that are warped or stained are a sure sign that there is water damage behind the wall. Always ensure that a proper diagnosis has been done by a professional trade prior to carrying out any type of repairs. They have both the tools and knowledge to ensure the leak is repaired correctly.

Loose or missing grout within your shower should always be sealed as soon as possible. This allows water to penetrate behind the tile to the waterproof membrane underneath. Discoloured grout is not only an eyesore but a sure sign you have a leaking shower. Left untreated for a long period it can lead to structural damage which will end up costing you more to fix. The condition and colour of the grout in your shower are one of the biggest indicators to the health of your shower.

DIY

In today's age with information at your fingertips it is a tempting thought to go the DIY route. It seems we can Google or YouTube anything. But if you aren't particularly handy I would not suggest this route. Your home is your most valuable asset and water leaks within your bathroom are a serious issue. Therefore it only makes sense to have it repaired professionally by a trained technician for peace of mind.

Professional companies have the knowledge, tools and commercial-grade materials that normally aren’t found in a DIY kit. They also have diagnostic equipment to accurately pinpoint the source of the leak.

Don’t ignore the signs of a shower leak. A leaking shower left for an excessive amount of time will only cost you more in the long run to fix.
